MUCINOUS OVARIAN TUMORS: EXPERIENCE OF THE PATHOLOGICAL ANATOMY LABORATORY OF THE MOULAY ISMAIL MILITARY HOSPITAL IN MEKNES (RETROSPECTIVE STUDY ON 21 CASES FROM 2016 TO 2022

ABSTRACT
Mucinoustumors of the ovary are epithelial tumors characterized by a proliferation of
mucosecretingcellsreminiscent of endocervical or intestinal epithelium. They can be classified into benign,
borderline and malignant tumors. 80% of mucinous tumors of the ovary are benign; 10% are border line and 10%
are malignant. Malignant mucinous tumors of the ovary have a very poor prognosis due to delayed diagnosis. The
objective of ourworkis to carry out a retrospective study, to study the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and
anatomy pathological aspects of mucinoustumors of the ovary diagnosed in the pathological anatomy department
of the Moulay Ismail Meknes Military Hospital. Our series consisted of 24 patients with ovary anmucinous
tumors. Ten medical files were found in the archives of the obstetrics and gynecology department. The study
period was 7 years (from January 2016 to December 2022) with an a verage annual recruitment of 3.42 patients.
The anatomo-pathological examination remains the fundamental examination to determine the benign or
malignant nature of the tumor, dictate the therapeutic attitude and evaluate the prognosis. The pathological study
of mucinoustumors of the ovary requires careful macroscopic and microscopic examination. The distinction
between benign and malignant tumorsis not always easy. Radical surgeryis the treatment of choice for border line
and malignant tumors with the possibility of conservative surgery in certain situations. Malignant mucinous
tumors of the ovary have a poor response to chemotherapy regimens based on platinumsalts, which encourages us
to further search for molecules better suited to these tumors.
