EFFICACY OF CANALITH REPOSITIONING PROCEDURES AMONG BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO CASES

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Canalith Repositioning Procedures (CRP) are said to be the most effective tool to treat the patients with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which is manifested through vertigo/dizziness. These procedures represent the set of certain gravity dependent positions which displace the otoconia from free floating canal to the saccule. This study was done to determine the efficacy of canal specific CRP in BPPV. Methods: A total of 55 patients (both male and female) of mean age 46.4 years with chief complaint vertigo/dizziness has been taken. Of those, 42 subjects were diagnosed with BPPV. The treatment was conducted through maneuvers i.e Epley‟s, lempert, modified gufoni, yacovino and skull vibration. Results: All treated patients benefitted from the therapy. The efficacy of 1st treatment session was 65.46% and of 2nd treatment session was 76.36%. The percentages of subject treated with maneuver were 61.85% (34) while those with maneuver plus vibration were 76.36%. Conclusion: The study showed that CRP and skull vibration efficacy in BPPV was very high. Repetitions of maneuvers are required regardless of affect sides or multiple canals involved.
