Abstract
EXPLORING RASAPANCHAKA AS A FRAMEWORK FOR INTEGRATIVE PHARMACOLOGY: BRIDGING AYURVEDA AND MODERN SCIENCE

Ramit Singha*

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of life sciences, provides a comprehensive understanding of pharmacodynamics through the doctrine of Rasapanchaka, which encompasses Rasa (taste), Guna (qualities), Virya (potency), Vipaka (post-digestive effect), and Prabhava (specific action). These five fundamental parameters collectively determine the karma or therapeutic efficacy of any dravya (substance). Each aspect of Rasapanchaka reflects the multidimensional nature of drug behavior, accounting for sensory, physicochemical, and energetic interactions within the body. In contrast, modern pharmacology interprets drug action primarily through molecular interactions, receptor affinity, enzyme modulation, and biochemical pathways. Despite differences in epistemology and methodology, both systems share the ultimate aim of elucidating mechanisms underlying drug efficacy, safety, and individual response. This review explores Rasapanchaka as a conceptual and scientific framework for integrative pharmacology, establishing parallels with modern biochemical, biophysical, and systems biology principles. By correlating traditional Ayurvedic parameters with molecular pharmacodynamics and bioenergetics, Rasapanchaka can serve as a bridge between qualitative ancient insights and quantitative modern science. Such integrative understanding may enhance rational drug development, promote evidence-based validation of Ayurvedic formulations, and foster personalized therapeutic strategies aligning with Prakriti-based approaches. Therefore, Rasapanchaka not only preserves the philosophical depth of Ayurveda but also provides a viable model for developing a holistic pharmacological paradigm that unites physical, chemical, and energetic dimensions of drug action—promoting innovation in both traditional and modern medical sciences.
