Abstract
PHYTOCHEMMICAL SCREENING AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF TUBEROUS RHIZOME EXTRACTS OF CURCULIGO ORCHIOIDES GAERTN.(KALI MUSALI)

Dr. Sanjay Jagtap*

ABSTRACT

Curculigo orchioids Gaertn ( Family:-Hypoxidaceae) is a rhizomatous monsoon perennial with plicate leaves flowering in July-August, occurs in forest floors of moist deciduous forests as well as in open lateritic rocky plateaus amongst grasses. It is commonly known as Kali Musali an endangered medicinal plant and need to be conserved and domesticated. The tuberous rhizomes are slightly bitter, mucilaginous, tonic, alternative, demulcent, diuretic, restorative; used in filarial, fever, diarrhea, jaundice, asthma. Poultice is applied for skin diseases to reduce itch. The phytochemical study, antioxidant activity and quantitative multi-mineral analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectrometry of the rhizome extracts of Curculigo orchioids were evaluated. Phytochemical screening indicated that, plants are rich in a variety of primary and secondary metabolites such as carbohydrates, glycosides, alkaloids, vitamin C, vitamin E, flavonoids, phenols, and saponins. A high-throughput micro-scaled method has been developed which enables digestion of small quantities of plant samples for subsequent elemental profiling by ICP-spectrometry.This piece of work highlights the biochemical and ethno pharmacological significance of Curculigo orchioids.

Keywords: Kali Musali, Endangered, Curculigo orchioids, Medicinal plant.
