Nutritional status strongly correlated with disease progression and survival, so the present investigation was carried out on 110 HIV positive patients of Uttarakhand, India to evaluate their nutritional status of by anthropometry, biochemical and dietary methods. The per cent of male and female subjects were 47.27 and 52.73, respectively. A 68 per cent of subjects had Heamoglobin less than 12 g/dl. Majority of subjects (50 per cent) had CD4 cell count in the range of 200-350. The mean height, weight, body mass index, mid upper arm circumference and triceps skin fold thickness of male subjects were 19.82±3.19 (kg/m2), 24.07±2.85(cm) and 9.17±4.42 (mm) respectively. The corresponding values for female subjects were 19.89±3.12 (kg/m2), 21.59±2.81 (cm) and 11.65±5.02 (mm). The mean energy intake of sedentary and moderate male subjects was 1907±467 and 2043±454 kcal/day respectively. The corresponding values for female subjects were 1570±434 and 1844±288 kcal/day respectively. The protein intake of male and female subjects was 54.73±12.33 and 45.24±11.59 gm respectively. A significant difference was found between mean dietary intake and computed RDA. The dietary intake was inadequate which is also reflected in low anthropometric measurements. Routine nutritional assessment is needed to assess the nutritional status so that the preventive measures could be taken well in advance.
