A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY OF MADHUMEHA (NIDDM) PATIENTS IN EASTERN PART OF UTTAR PRADESH

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the Predisposing factors of Non Insuline Dependent Diabetes Mellitus(NIDDM) patients in the eastern part of Uttar pradesh. Design: Cross Sectional Survey. Setting: Sir Sunder Lal Hospital, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Methods: Routine data were collected based on Age, Sex,Occupation, Education, Habitat, Marital Status, Dietary Habit , Bowel Habit, Weight ,Basal Metabolic Index, Family History, Prakriti, Aggravating Kala, Affection to specific Rasa, Duration of Illness, Distribution of Symptoms Fasting Blood Sugar, Postprandial Blood Sugar and Glycosylated Haemoglobin Levels in NIDDM (Madhumeha) patients using responses to a questionnaire completed by them. Discussion: High incidence was noted among serviceman, middle economic class residing in urban locality. Overweight persons, with higher BMI, have greater incidence to develop the disease. Conclusion: Recorded trends that have been showed that the major predisposing factors in this study was sedentary life style, lack of exercise, obesity and high BMI. Genetic predisposition also played a role in the etiopathogenesis of disease. According to ayurveda vata kaphaj prakriti person and those indulge more sweet food stuffs were more prone for Madhumeha(Diabetes Mellitus).
