ABSTRACT

Introduction: Globally, 2.6 billion people do not use improved sanitation. According to Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey (EDHS) 2011, 8.8% of the country has an improved toilet facility. Therefore, this study aims to assess latrine utilization and associated factors in South east zone of Tigray, Northern Ethiopia. Methods: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted in rural households of South East zone of Tigray from January- March 2014. A total of 570 head of households were included in this study using a multi-stage sampling technique. Descriptive, binary and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed using SPSS version 16 and a variable having p<0.05 was considered as statistically significant variable in all tests. Result: A total of 570 head of households were included in this study and making a response rate of 98.1%. Of these, 60.5% were females. The latrine utilization prevalence was 37.6%. Those not visiting within two weeks was 60% less likely use proper latrine utilization than visiting within two weeks [AOR=0.403, 95%CI= (0.230-0.706)]. Those head of households who have formal education were 2.7 times more satisfactory [AOR=2.679, 95%CI= (1.581-4.539)] than not able to read & write. Conclusion: Behavior change in latrine utilization at critical time did not show remarkable changes. Strengthening of health education, frequency of home visit by Health extension workers and appropriate technical support are the key factors to improve the utilization of latrines.
