ABSTRACT

Menopause is permanent cessation of menstruation at the end of reproductive life. During this period there is gradual progressive loss of ovarian follicular activity.[1] Rajonivrutti between the age of 40-55years is often accompanied with psychological symptoms such as mood disturbances, insomnia, anxiety, depression, memory loss, and somatic disturbances. Menopausal syndrome begins with menstrual irregularities and extends to one year after permanent cessation of menses.Modern medicine tries to manage menopausal syndrome with hormones. However hormonal therapy has its own short comings. The incidence of malignant breast disorders is fairly high in women who underwent hormonal replacement therapy. Classical texts of Ayurveda opine that menstrual rhythm ceases at the age of 50 years.[2,3,4] Menopause is a physiological phenomenon. Stress and modern living conditions disturb this transitional phase in a woman’s life and the quality of life gets impaired. This is where Ayurvedic line of treatment can restore the quality of life without any toxic side effects. Kushmanda Rasayana acts as bruhmana, vrsya, balyam and having several health benefits.[5] Manasamitra vatakam is indicated in the management of Mano vikaras.[6] Thus, this research has been undertaken to find a safe and effective medicament in ayurveda for the management of Rajonivritti.

Keywords: Rajonivritti, Menopausal Syndrome, Kushmanda Rasayana, Manasamitravatakam.
