INHIBITION OF PLATELET AGGREGATION AND ANTIOXIDATIVE EFFECT OF SOME PLANT FOODS

ABSTRACT

Phytochemicals in vegetables and fruits are reported to modulate several disease preventing mechanisms including reduction of platelet aggregation. This study investigated the effects of commonly consumed green vegetables on platelet aggregation in vitro, and antioxidative effect of aqueous extracts of Moringa oleifera (MO), Murraya koenigi (MK), Coleus barbatum (CB) and Alternanthera sessilis (AS) with various concentrations (10-50μl) using two agonists ( collagen and ADP ) in platelet rich plasma and platelet membranes, from blood of healthy volunteers. All the 4 extracts were effective in inhibiting collagen induced platelet aggregation. Extracts of raw samples showed significantly higher (70-86%) dose-dependent inhibitory effect compared to heat-treated extracts (25-76%) with the exception of MO. The IC 50 values ranged from 0.18-3.8mg in the raw extracts, both raw and heat- treated extracts of MO exhibited the lowest concentration of IC50. Extracts of all the four samples (both raw and heat-treated) effectively suppressed the formation of MDA through the cyclooxygenase pathway, in a dose dependant manner. The MDA release was significantly lower in the presence of extracts of raw samples indicating higher antioxidant efficacy. Results demonstrate that compounds of vegetable extracts possess both anti-platelet and anti-oxidative effect in vitro.
