Abstract
EFFECT OF EXTRACTED EXOPOLYSACCHARIDE OF PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA O1 STRAIN ON BIOFILM FORMATION ABILITY OF MULTI DRUG RESISTANT (MDR) AND NON-MDR ISOLATES OF ACINETOBACTER SPECIES

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Acinetobacter species is gram-negative cocobacilli which have been associated with outbreaks of nosocomial infections. Biofilm formation is one of the increasing causes of mortality associated with these infections. Biofilms are the most common mode of bacterial growth in nature and recently it has been reported that P. aeruginosa can produce exopolysaccharide which is capable of inhibiting biofilm development in many gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Therefore this study was undertaken to isolate and study the biofilm formation among MDR and Non MDR Acinetobacter spp. and inhibition of biofilm by the extracted Exopolysaccharide of P. aeruginosa O1 strain. Method: MDR and Non-MDR Acinetobacter spp. were obtained from different clinical samples. Biofilm formation assay was done by Tissue culture plate assay and Biofilm inhibition assay was done using extracted Exopolysaccharide by ethanol precipitation method. Results: Total 58 Acinetobacter spp. were obtained, out of which 39 (67.2%) were MDR of which 41.1% were inhibited with exopolysaccharide of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 19 (32.8%) were Non-MDR of which 63.2% were inhibited with the same. Discussion: This study has shown that P. aeruginosa O1 strain expresses extracellular polysaccharides which have a better inhibitory effect on Non MDR biofilm producing Acinetobacter spp. compared with MDR biofilm producers. Thus, P. aeruginosa PO1 strain produces and extracellular exopolysaccharide that inhibits biofilm formation in phylogenetically diverse bacteria.
