Abstract
A ROLE OF SIDDHA MEDICINES IN THE MANAGEMENT OF HEPATIC DISEASE - A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Liver is the largest and most important metabolic organ of the human body, which is also responsible for the reduction and elimination of drugs and toxins in the human body. A permanent high stress on the liver due to drugs and other exogenous substances can cause the formation of toxic metabolites to damage or at worst, to the death of hepatocytes As far as, liver disease is a major health problem worldwide. The treatment for liver disease has a long history, which was started from the ancient times (before 2000 yrs) in Siddha system of medicine. In India, a large part of the population seeks traditional medical care for treatment of liver diseases. Management of liver diseases is still a challenge to the modern medicine as modern drugs have very little to offer for the alleviation of hepatic ailments. In the absence of reliable hepato-protective drugs in the market, herbal preparations play a vital role in the management of various liver disorders.
