ABSTRACT
Mankind, it has been said, is at cross roads of destiny. The incredible growth of human population stands out as one of the fundamental events of modern era. The incoming flood of unwanted children, which marks the present stage of civilization, has brought the social and economic life, especially in the developing countries, to a point of chaos. This flood is due, not to any rise in birth rate but to indiscriminate breeding under modern conditions of improved health care. Contraception has its history way back from ancient era of Egyptians, Greek and Romans. What distinguishes the concept of a drug as epitomised in Ayurveda, is its eternal nature. It remains unchanged through the vagaries of human history and will remain so, as long as life exists on this planet. Inspite of the positive features of this system, any effort at standardising a contraceptive drug based on the doctrine of tridosha or the principles of rasa, guna, veerya and vipaka, will involve extensive research. Normalcy of tridosha is needed for the normal conception, tridoshas have their particular role in causing natural conception. If these are disturbed natural conception doesn‟t takes place. Hence contraception in Ayurveda needs drugs that alter some gunas of these tridosha activities in system which disturbs the equilibrium which causes contraception.
Keywords: Contraception, Ayurveda, tridoshas, normal conception.
