ABSTRACT

Gastric cancer is a multifactorial process, involving the action of various genes at numerous levels, along the multistage process of carcinogenesis. Exhaustive efforts have been made towards the unravelling of molecular mechanisms underlying the process of gastric carcinogenesis. However, a detailed mechanism of its development still remains unclear. Majority of gastric cancers are characterized by two major genomic instability pathways including Microsatellite Instability (MSI) and Chromosomal Instability (CIN). Chromosomal destabilizations like these occur as an early event in the disease progression. This review describes our current knowledge of instability pathways and various oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes implicated in gastric carcinogenesis, which could aid in the development of new therapeutic strategies for combating this global issue.

Keywords: Gastric cancer, Oncogenes, Tumor suppressor Genes, Chromosomal instability, microsatellite instability.
