AYURVEDIC LITERATURE REVIEW OF AN HERB INDRAVARUNI (CITRULLUS COLOCYNTHIS SCHRAD)

ABSTRACT
Indravaruni is a well known plant of ancient medical sciences. It is described in almost all Samhita‟s and Nighantus of Ayurveda. Indravaruni is Citrullus colocynthis Schrad belongs to family Cucurbitaceae, mostly found throughout India, both wild and cultivated. C. colocynthis is extensively used by the Ayurvedic practitioners to treat wide number disease. It is traditionally Practiced by various ethnic groups especially to treat Diabetes, Constipation, Abdominal Pain, Amennorhoea, Deafness, Rheumatism etc. Indravaruni is described with its various formulations and indications in Samhita and Chikitsa grantha. Indravaruni is one of the content of Lodhrasava, Phaltrikadi kwath, Mahatiktak ghrita etc formulations given in Charak chikitsa Sthana, Mahavajrak tail, Dhaturadi churna, Triphaladi tail etc. are the formulations given by Acharya Sushruta in which Indravaruni is one of the ingredient. In Astanga Hridaya, preparations like Abhyarista, Rodhrasava, Narayan Churna etc. contain Indravaruni as one of the content. Similarly in Harita Samhita, Bhel samhita, Ashtanga Samgraha, Kashyap Samhita, Bhavprakash Samhita, Chakradutta, Yogaratnakar, Bhaishajya Ratnavali various therapeutically important preparations of Indravaruni are given. In various Nighantus like Saushrut Nighantu, Ashtanga Nighantu, Dhanvantari Nighantu, Bhavpraksh Nighantu, Raj Nighantu etc. description of Indravaruni in their respective Varga/ Gana like Shyamadi, Guduchyadi, Pipalyadi etc. have been given. In this article we are going to discuss complete literature review of Indravaruni.
