Abstract
RELATIONSIP OF SMOKING AND ALCOHLISM TO MULTI DRUG RESISTANT TUBERCULOSIS: A HOSPITAL BASED STUDY

ABSTRACT

Alcohol consumption and smoking are an important risk factor for tuberculosis is. A meta-analysis conducted by LÖNNROTH et al1, which included studies published up to 2007, indicated that diagnosis of an alcohol use disorder resulted in a nearly three-fold increase in the risk of tuberculosis. Based on this meta-analysis, alcohol consumption was estimated to be responsible for approximately 10% of all incident cases and deaths due to tuberculosis. This study was also conducted to assess the correlation of smoking and alcoholism as risk factors for tuberculosis.
