A CLINICAL STUDY ON THE OCULAR MANIFESTATIONS IN THYROID EYE DISEASE

ABSTRACT
This clinical study of ocular manifestations of Thyroid eye disease, conducted in the department of Ophthalmology, Government general hospital, is an observational cross sectional study including all clinically diagnosed cases of thyroid eye disease, and excluding those who were not willing to give consent and patients other ocular and systemic pathologies. A total of 40 patients, both males and females between ages of 11years to 50 years were studied after taking an informed consent from them. All the patients were subjected to visual acuity assessment, exophthalmometry, USG B scan, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, relavent blood and radiological investigations. Majority of the patients were middle aged, females, non smokers, and had hyperthyroid status in this study. Majority of the cases had bilateral manifestations. Foreign body sensation, dry eyes being the most common symptom, Eye lid retraction was the most common clinical sign in this study. Thyroid related eye illness is the most common cause of unilateral or bilateral proptosis in adults. Ocular / visual disability and / or facial disfigurement, and resultant irreversible tissue alterations / thyroid orbitopathy, could be avoided by timely medical/ surgical intervention by ophthalmologist / physician to curtail major ocular adverse manifestations ot TED.
