INDIAN DIETARY FIBERS, THEIR ROLE IN HEALTH MANAGEMENT AND DISEASE PREVENTION

ABSTRACT
Dietary fiber, often referred to as roughage or bulk, encompasses the components of plant based foods that elude digestion and absorption within the body. In contrast to nutrients like proteins and carbohydrates which break down in body and get assimilated, the fiber remains undigested as it traverses stomach, small intestine, and colon, eventually exiting in a relatively unchanged state. Fiber is commonly categorized into two types: soluble, which dissolves in water and insoluble, which remains unaffected by water. The presence of dietary fibers holds paramount significance in upholding the sound functioning of body. The constitution of fiber comprises plant elements or substances that traversing the stomach and intestines with minimal alteration. Predominantly fiber serves the purpose of sustaining well-being of the digestive system. There are many Indian plants which serve as the source of fibers. The dietary substances also encompass many fibers obtained from the natural sources. Present article explains health benefits of some dietary fibers obtained from the natural sources.
