ABSTRACT
Aim: In different health-care field, priority was given to the usage of herbal products and herb-based medicines as the treatment measure. It is the prime responsibility of the monitoring authorities to ensure that the population gets pure, potent, efficacious and safe medications, as the demand of herbal medicine usage is increasing tremendously by the public. This is an endeavor to establish the scientific basis of one of the herbal formulations in Ayurveda “Simhyadi Kvatha Churna”. Methodology: Macro-microscopical study, physico-chemical and phyto-chemical analysis, and HPTLC study, will help in recognizing the usefulness and authentication of the formulation. Various phytoconstituents present in different parts of the plant is identified with the help of phytochemical screening and through HPTLC electronic image of the chromatographic fingerprint of the identified phytochemical constituents is obtained. Results: Physico-chemical constants like pH, Acid insoluble ash values, Water soluble extract, Alcohol soluble extractive values, Moisture content, total ash were found to be in acceptable range as per Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (API Part l, Vol I). Phyto-chemical Screening Analysis showed the presence of phenol, saponins and carbohydrate. The HPTLC analysis of “Simhyadi Kvatha Churna” revealed the presence of various phytochemicals. Conclusion: The macro-microscopical study, physico-chemical and phyto-chemical analysis, HPTLC study results obtained confirmed the effectiveness and stability of the formulation. These studies will definitely help to set a standard for this traditional medicine.
