Personalized genomics is an essential component of this developing personalized medicine paradigm, but it is not the only one. Genetic and genomic medicine differs more in terms of quantitative than qualitative factors. The foundation for personalized genomics was laid by the introduction of genetics into medicine. The use of variants as markers for diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment targets, the use of clinically validated variants that may not be functionally characterized, the segregation of these variants in both non-Mendelian and Mendelian patterns, the significance of gene-environment interactions, the use of variants that are shared by genetic and genomic aspects medicine.
