THE ROLE OF EFFEROCYTOSIS IN THE RESOLUTION OF INFLAMMATION: MECHANISMS AND THERAPEUTIC IMPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT

Efferocytosis, the clearance of apoptotic cells by phagocytes, is a crucial process in resolving inflammation and maintaining tissue homeostasis. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms underlying efferocytosis and its therapeutic implications for inflammatory diseases. Key aspects discussed include the molecular players involved in efferocytosis, such as phosphatidylserine and phagocytic receptors, and the immunomodulatory effects triggered by the engulfment of apoptotic cells. Additionally, the dysregulation of efferocytosis in various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions is explored, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target. Strategies to modulate efferocytosis for therapeutic benefit, as well as challenges and future directions in this field, are also discussed.
