ASSOCIATION BETWEEN THYROID FUNCTION AND CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE AT A TERTIARY CARE CENTRE

ABSTRACT

Background and Aims: Chronic liver disease is a progressive deterioration of liver functions. Cirrhosis is a final stage of chronic liver disease. Liver disease has its impact on thyroid hormone levels and this disturbance in thyroid profile is an extra hepatic manifestation of cirrhosis. Therefore we performed this study to assess the association between thyroid function and chronic liver disease by measuring thyroid function in patients with chronic liver disease and its association with severity of Liver disease. Methods: This Hospital based observational cross-sectional study was performed, over a period of 8 months (from March 2022 – December 2022), in the Dept. Of Medicine, Pt. JNM Medical College and associated Dr. B.R.A.M. Hospital, Raipur. The study involved 100 adult patients with chronic liver disease. The patients were evaluated on the basis of history, clinical examination and laboratory investigation. Severity of liver disease was assessed by using Child Pugh score. Results: Most of the patients were found to be in Child Pugh Class B that is 54% followed by Class C that is 40% and the minimum patients belonged to class A that is 6% .In majority (91%) of patients, T3 was decreased, while TSH and T4 were normal in (90%) and (85%) of patients, respectively. This study showed a significance difference between T3, T4, TSH and Child Pugh Class. Conclusions: Thyroid function gets deranged in majority of patients with chronic liver disease. Thyroid function test should be done regularly in liver cirrhosis patients to reduce morbidity and mortality.
