ABSTRACT

Anxiety disorders are a cluster of mental disorders characterized by significant and uncontrollable feelings of fear such that a person‟s social, occupational, and personal function are significantly impaired. The present work deals with phytochemical investigation and anxiolytic activity of leaves of Brassica Rapa Subsp.rapa leaves belonging to the family Brassicaceae, a potential medicinal plant. The plant is used in traditional folk medicine for the treatment of different ailments such as headaches, chest complaints, rheumatism, oedemas, gonorrhea, syphilis and rabies. The ethanolic extract was evaluated for its anxiolytic activity against adult Albino Wistar Rats. Phytochemical investigation of leaves of Brassica Rapa Subsp.rapa leaves revealed that alcoholic extract contains glycosides, steroids, alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, tannins and carbohydrates. Two concentrations (100 mg/ml and 200 mg/ml) of extract were studied, and are involved for the determination of anxiolytic activity. It was found that ethanolic extract exhibited significant anxiolytic activity at 200mg/ml dose. Diazepam (2 mg/kg) was used as a standard reference drug.

Keywords: Anxiolytic activity, Brassica Rapa L., Diazepam.
