AN OVERVIEW OF NATURAL PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS AS ANTIPLATELET AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AGENTS IN MEDICINE

ABSTRACT
Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the world, having to do with alterations in blood platelet activation. Phenolic acids and flavonoids (two main classes of polyphenols) demonstrate beneficial pro-health effect on the human body, including anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, antilipidemic, antiviral, antibacterial and anticancer. We reviewing here, the latest data in the literature, regarding the antiplatelet and cardioprotective effects of these polyphenols, obtained by in vitro, clinical and in vivo studies. Bioavailability and their role on preventing cardiovascular health problems are commented. The potential benefits of these polyphenols to circulatory system and metabolic alterations from human intervention studies are also discussed. Despite the huge information about their efficacy and potency, controversial results has been obtained in some cases questioning their applicability. The need for well-designed and uniform methods to assess their therapeutic potential to humans is highlighted. The review has evaluated outcomes available from a number of fields and has attempted to channel it into an understanding of the effect and applicability of natural phenolics as antiplatelet and anti-inflammatory drugs.
