EVALUATION OF ANTIPYRETIC ACTIVITY OF EUGENIA JAMBOLANA ROOT POWDER IN WISTAR ALBINO RATS

ABSTRACT
Background: The present study was carried out to evaluate the antipyretic activity of Eugenia jambolana root powder using brewer’s yeast induced pyrexia method in wistar albino rats. Eugenia jambolana is a large evergreen tropical tree which belongs to the family of Myrtaceae. This plant has aerial as well as terrestrial roots. In this study, eighteen either sex of healthy adult Wistar albino rats weight about 200-250g with equal age were used and they were divided into 3 groups, each contained 6 rats. The rats of all groups were made febrile by injecting 10ml/kg of 15% brewer’s yeast. The control, standard and test groups were given orally with 10ml/Kg of saline, 265.67mg/Kg of Paracetomol powder mixed with 10ml/Kg of Warm water and 265.67mg/Kg of Eugenia jambolana root powder mixed with 10ml/Kg of Warm water respectively. Then rectal temperatures were recorded for every30 minutes post dosing. The results of present study suggest that the root powder of Eugenia jambolana has effective antipyretic activity (p<0.05) and there is significant correlation between the induced temperature and the reduced temperature.
