Abstract
POTENTIAL SPASMOLYTIC ACTIVITY OF CITRUS MAXIMA LEAF AND BARK EXTRACT IN ACETYLCHOLINE INDUCED CONTRACTION OF CHICKEN ILEUM

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the leaves and barks of Citrus maxima for antispasmodic activity. The leaves and barks of this particular genus has been employed for several medical conditions. The GI tract is in responsible of consuming and digesting food, and also absorbs nutrients and getting rid of any leftover waste. Numerous illnesses that affect the GI system might negatively affect digestion and overall health. Diarrhoea, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), constipation, peptic ulcer, and other digestive issues are common. GIT disorders are any disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract. This group includes any symptoms that manifest in the middle or lower gastrointestinal system. The aim of this study was to examine spasmolytic activity of the leaves and barks of Citrus maxima on the chicken ileum. The study uses chicken ileum to assess spasmolytic activity of C. maxima leaves and barks on intestinal contraction. Some traditional uses of C.maxima includes source of diabetic medication for diabetes, the fruit and peel were used as a stomach tonic, inflammation, cardiac stimulant,etc. Some reports also showed that the leaves were used to treat swellings as well as ulcers. The roots and barks were also said to have antimicrobial activity. As a result of this research, it was determined that the leaf and bark extract of Citrus maxima showed spasmolytic activity on chicken ileum.
