ABSTRACT
Aims & Objective-To assess health seeking behaviour of pregnant women in eastern U.P and to estimate the prevalence of anemia, serum folic acid, Vitamin B12 and calcium deficiency in them and to assess the pregnancy outcome in them. Material and Method- This study was conducted in Department of Obst & Gynae, MLN Medical College, Allahabad over a period of one year (2012-2013) in first 500 antenatal women who consented for the study. They were divided in group A & B depending upon their attitude towards antenatal checkups and micronutrient supplementation. Prevalence of anemia, serum levels of folic acid, vitamin B12, calcium was estimated and pregnancy outcomes were assessed. The variables were compared by using Chi Square test. Result-Only 60 % of the women were compliant towards checkups and supplementation. Maximum visits were by primigravida during second trimester. Overall prevalence of anemia was 73.4%; 68% in the complaint group and 86% in the ignorant group. The percentage of women with low serum levels of folic acid and vitamin B12 were higher in ignorant group; 32% vs 18.66% and 57% vs 47% whereas low serum calcium levels were there in both the groups; 79% vs 89%. Congenital malformations, fetal growth restriction, preterm births, preeclampsia and low birth weight babies were significantly higher in the ignorant group B (p-value<0.05). Conclusion- Poor health seeking behaviour adversely affects the pregnancy. Various Government and Non-Government plans should be mapped out in such a way to increase the awareness regarding early registrations for antenatal checkups, if not in the prenatal period, at least at the very start of pregnancy during the first trimester.
Keywords: antenatal checkup, micronutrients, anemia, poor pregnancy outcome.
