Saad Ali Naser, Mahdi M. Thuwaini and Dr. Ali Esmail Al-Snafi*

ABSTRACT

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a widely prevalent condition that causes major disability globally. Osteoarthritis, often known as a condition primarily affecting the joint cartilage, can also impact the other components of the joint. The study aims to investigate the role of inflammatory cytokines in the progression and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. The current study is a case-control trial conducted on 44 patients with osteoarthritis and 44 healthy individuals as a control group. The patients were diagnosed by a specialist physician at Al-Nasiriya Teaching Hospital between November 2023 and March 2024. 5 ml of blood was collected from each participant, the serum was separated by centrifugation and stored at -20°C. The levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α were measured using ELISA. The results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the osteoarthritis and control group in age, residence and smoking. However, there were significant differences in body mass index, gender and employment status. Cytokine levels showed significant differences between the control group and osteoarthritis patients. IL-1β and IL-6 levels were increased and IL-10 and TNF-α levels were decreased in osteoarthritis patients compared with the control group. A significant positive correlation (r=0.546) was recorded between IL-1β and TNF-α. It is evident that inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of the disease.
