ANTI-PROLIFERATIVE ACTIVITY OF CHROMONE CARBOXYLIC ACID FROM CALOPHYLLUM TOMENTOSUM WIGHT

ABSTRACT
Calophyllum species are an evergreen tree belonging to Clusiaceae family used as folklore medicine to cure
various kinds of diseases reported in Ayurveda. All parts of the plants are useful as an active ingredient for the
preparation of a botanical medicine known as ‘Punnaga’, ‘Surapunnaga’ and ‘Tamoil’ etc. The phytochemical
investigation of the chloroform extract of the defatted leaf revealed the presence of apetalic acid as major chemical
constituent along with coumarins, chromene, terpenoids, steroids, etc. The structural characterization of apetalic
acid were identified in comparison with their 1H & 13C NMR and mass spectroscopic data with published values in
literature. It was tested to check the efficacy of anti-proliferative activity against against different human cancer
cell lines. In vitro assay of this compound on various human cancer cell line revealed that it had moderate antiproliferative
activity by using SRB assay in comparison with standard drug paclitaxel. The structure activity
relationship (SAR) of the active constituent and its derivatives is reported herein.
