ABSTRACT
Aim: To assess the relation between quality of life and medication adherence. Materials and methods: A hospital-based prospective study was carried out in 100 COPD patients at SH medical center, Kerala for a period of 6 months and the association between quality of life and medication adherence is evaluated. The quality of life was measured using the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), and medication adherence was assessed using the Morisky Medication Adherence 8 Scale (MMAS-8). Result: The findings revealed a significant improvement in respiratory health, as indicated by a decrease in the mean SGRQ score from 59.92 at baseline to 36.17 at follow-up. Simultaneously, there was a notable increase in the mean MMAS score from 4.51 at baseline to 6.20 at follow-up, indicating improved adherence to prescribed medication regimens. The results suggest a positive correlation between medication adherence and quality of life in COPD patients. Conclusion: The significant improvement in medication adherence, evidenced by the shift from low to medium and high adherence categories, highlights the impact of patient counseling. These interventions played a crucial role in helping patients understand the importance of their medication regimens, leading to better adherence and, consequently, improved quality of life. Clinical significance: The study can help identify specific factors that influence both Quality of Life and medication adherence, allowing for more personalized and effective care plans. By recognizing the barriers to medication adherence, healthcare providers can offer targeted counselling and support to address these issues, thereby improving adherence rates.
