Abstract
OVARIAN FOLLICULAR ATRESIA OBSERVED IN THE INDIAN NATIVE KILLIFISH APLOCHEILUS LINEATUS FROM THE RIVER TAMBRAPARANEI

J. Michael Antony and Prabhu Arachi*

ABSTRACT

Atresia of ovarian follicles is an important process in the physiology of Aplocheilus lineatus. It contributes to the regulatory reproductive output and is essential in maintaining homeostasis in the ovary. This study examines the structural, morphological, and chemical composition of the atresia of the follicles in the Indian native killifish Aplocheilus lineatus. It focuses on the degeneration of the matured ripe oocytes and the mechanism underlying atresia. Histomorphology studies revealed the different stages of atresia starting form the unyolked oocyte to the yolked oocyte. Some of the factors, such as photoperiod, temperature and water quality, also influence atresia. Not many studies have been conducted in follicular atresia in fish; hence, the present study. It is necessary to understand the dynamics of atresia in order to study the adaptations in the reproductive behaviour of Aplocheilus lineatus

Keywords: Atresia, oocyte degeneration, ovarian follicle, Killifish.
