PREPARATION OF SHALLOTS (Allium cepa L) ETHANOL EXTRACT NANOEMULSION FOR MEDICATION OF MILD BURN WOUNDS

ABSTRACT
Shallots (Allium cepa L.) have been proven as burn wound dressings as well as topical antimicrobial agents because they can effectively heal minor burns at a concentration of 20% with a very significant decrease in the area of burns on day 1 of 5.55 cm2 to 0.99 cm2 on day 15 with a wound contraction percentage of 58.27%. The potential of shallot ethanol extract as a mild burn medication can be further enhanced and become more beneficial if this shallot ethanol extract is further developed as a topical nanoemulsion preparation, a nano-particle-sized material in the form of an emulsion. The purpose of this study was to determine how to formulate a topical nanoemulsion preparation of shallot ethanol extract for mild burn medication and to determine the characteristics of the topical nanoemulsion formulation. The topical nanoemulsion formulation of shallot ethanol extract for minor burns was obtained at optimum solubility conditions of olive oil-tween 80-glycerin combination with a ratio of 2:7:4 with transmittance parameters of 93.81%, total flavonoid content of 357.98 mg/36 g, polydispersity index of 0.166, and particle size of 16.63 nm, which has met the requirements as a nanoemulsion.
