ABSTRACT
This analytical cohort study investigated the effectiveness of Madhumega chooranam, a Siddha herbal formulation, in managing Type II Diabetes Mellitus (Madhumegam) among 30 patients over four months at the Outpatient Department of Pothu Maruthuvam, Government Siddha Medical College & Hospital, Palayamkottai. Patients were divided into two groups of 15 each: Group A received 2g of Madhumega chooranam with hot water before food twice daily, while Group B received the same dosage after food. Key parameters including Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), Post-prandial Blood Sugar (PPBS), and HbA1c were assessed before and after treatment. Both groups demonstrated highly significant improvements (p-value < 0.005) in FBS, PPBS, and HbA1c levels after the four-month intervention. For example, in Group A, mean FBS decreased from 167.00 to 97.2 mg/dl, and in Group B, from 158.40 to 100.60 mg/dl. An independent t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the two intervention timings (p-value < 0.005). Notably, Madhumega chooranam administered before food led to marked improvement in PPBS and HbA1c, while after food administration showed marked improvement in FBS. The study concludes that Madhumega chooranam is effective in reducing blood sugar levels in Type II Diabetes Mellitus patients, with the timing of administration influencing which glycemic parameters show greater improvement. Future research with larger-scale, randomized controlled, double-blinded trials is suggested to further validate these findings.
