INVESTIGATION OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-ESTEEM AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION AMONG STUDENTS STUDYING ENGLISH IN CHABAHAR CITY 2016

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Self-esteem is the most important Psychological factor in learning performance prediction.
Researchers believe that self-esteem is a determinants of human behavior .Some studies had shown a significant
positive relationship between self-esteem and academic achievement. This study aimed to investigate the
relationship between self-esteem and academic achievement motivation among students studying English in
Chabahar city. Material and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 students studying
English in Chabahar Universities which were selected randomly. Data were collected using a questionnaire which
included three parts. The first part was for demographic information. The second part was the 5 point cooper and
smith scale. The third part of questionnaire was the educational motivation questionnaire that was the reformed
version of learning motivations scale of Harter 1981. Data were analyzed by the SPSSv.19 through Descriptive
statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and Chi-square. Results: 100 English translating
students from Chabahar were included to this study. The mean age was 22.74±2.22. 67 of the respondents were
male (67%) and 33 were females (33%). There wasn’t any significant relationship between internal and external
motivation with self-esteem (p>0.05). The total score mean in internal motivation was 53.34±4.45. In external
motivation it was 34.13±3.02 and in self-esteem it was 30.10±3.33. Conclusion: The results of this study had
shown that there is no significant relationship between self-esteem and academic achievement motivation. Also
the self-esteem and academic motivation is not satisfactory among students.
