Abstract
EXTRACTION, PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOSE FROM CORN STALK AND ITS APPLICATION ON ESCHERICHIA COLI

Olanrewaju Anthony Damazio*, Johnson Oshiobugie Momoh

ABSTRACT

Corn Stalk (CS) was treated with alkali, acid hydrolyzed, and bleached, in order to extract native cellulose (NC). By employing chloroacetic acid to etherify the NC, carboxymethyl cellulose was produced. The changed cellulose's chemical composition, degree of substitution, proximate analysis, structural crystallinity, and thermal analysis were all reported. Modified cellulose had lower levels of fat and ash, according to proximate analysis. The crystallinity index of CMC was lower than that of the NC. The surface disruption during carboxylmethylation was confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), which showed rough spongy-like mass for modified cellulose and irregular rod-like morphology for native cellulose, respectively. The EDX analysis confirmed that cellulose was extracted from CS. FTIR and XRD results confirmed that the extracted cellulose had been modified to carboxymethyl cellulose. Improved stability following chemical alteration of the NC was demonstrated by thermal analysis. The native cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose exhibited little or no response against Escherichia coli.

Keywords: Carboxymethyl cellulose, Corn stalk, Modification, Native celluse, and Escherichia coli.
