Abstract
PLANTS AND PHYTOCHEMICALS AS POTENTIAL SOURCE OF ANTIMALARIAL DRUGS

ABSTRACT

A large number of bioactive compounds exist in various medicinal plants. Different part of plants and different types of extracts has been screened for their antimalarial activity in in- vitro and in – vivo test models. At present many plant derived antimalarial drugs like quinine from Cinchona officinalis, artemisinin, artesunate derived from Artemisa annua etc.are in clinical use for treatment of malaria. Resistance to artemisinin based drugs is now being observed. There is an urgent need of effective and safe antimalarial drugs. Novel antimalarial agents are being sought from traditional compounds. This review describes a number of plants and their extracts possessing antimalarial activity.
