SONOGRAPHIC CORRELATION OF EFW AND FETAL BIOMETRY WITH PLACENTAL THICKNESS

ABSTRACT
Aim and Objectives: Placenta is an important link between a mother and child. The proper & effective
functioning of placenta is responsible for the wellbeing of the fetus. This study is designed to investigate about
the possibility of using placental thickness as a parameter for estimating gestational age and estimated fetal weight
(EFW). Materials and Methods: This study was conducted from March 2013 to Dec 2013 in the department of
Radiology and department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, KIMS Hospital, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. A total 176
women were selected, according to the inclusion criteria. The gestational age was estimated by using biparietal
diameter[BPD], femur length[FL], abdominal circumference[AC]. The placental thickness was measured at the
point of umbilical cord insertion. The data was tabulated in designed clinical data collection sheets which contains
all variables of the study[placental thickness, estimated gestational age, estimated(EGA), fetal weight[EFW]. The
estimated fetal weight was determined by hadlock formula. Results: The placental thickness is considered as one
of the parameters for estimating gestational age of the fetus. Placental thickness appears as an accurate indicator
of gestational age in singleton pregnancies. It was observed that the placental thickness was highly significant
with gestational age in 3rd trimester(p<0.001).There was a linear regression correlation of placental thickness with
gestational parameters like femur length, Biparietal diameter, Head Circumference, Abdominal Circumference.
Placental thickness have significantly high correlation with all the above gestational parameters.
