Abstract
EFFICACY OF AYURVEDIC MEDICATIONS FOR TREATMENT OF ORAL SUBMUCOUS FIBROSIS.

ABSTRACT

An in vivo study on the effect of alcoholic extracts of turmeric (TE), turmeric oil (TO) and turmeric oleoresin (TOR), betel leaf extract, catechu and cinnamic acid on the burning sensation of mucosa, interincisal opening and incidence of micronuclei (MN) in subjects with oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) was conducted in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Nair Hospital Dental College, over a period of five years. This study was carried out in accordance with the guidelines for scientific research (Helsinki guidelines) and was accepted by Mumbai University. This article is a compilation and statistical comparison of the data collected during this study. It was observed that, after treatment all the patients showed a subjective response. Within 3 weeks of administration of Ayurvedic medications containing natural extracts there was relief from burning sensation and micro nuclei count which was repeated after three months was reduced and found statistically significant. Oral opening was increased in all the patients on clinical examination but this was not reflected in the statistical evaluation.
