A CDA ANALYSIS OF THE TWO PERSIAN TRANSLATIONS OF "THE LITTLE PRINCE"(QAZI AND SHAMLOU)

ABSTRACT

According to CDA theories, every language use is an ideological act. Ideologies can interfere in translation in various ways, as Farahzad (2012) illustrates these ways in her model at three levels of textual, paratextual, and semiotic levels. The present study aimed to answer how ideological difference is manifested in translation criticism and what strategies and ideological implications are involved in Persian translations. CDA tries to reveal the underlying ideologies that lead to choosing certain discursive patterns in production of texts. By studying “The Little Prince” and compared it with their Persian translations (Qazi and Shamlou), the researchers distinguished the ideologically laden words or phrases in the target text. The findings of the study indicate that not only these translators use subjectivity in choosing the Persian equivalents, but also ideology which is an inseparable part of the society, cannot be ignored or put aside during translation.
