COLORIMETRIC METHODS FOR QUANTITIVE DETERMINATION OF BACLOFEN IN BULK AND DOSAGE FORM PREPARATION

ABSTRACT

Three simple accurate, rapid and sensitive colorimetric methods for determination of baclofen in pure and pharmaceutical preparations, the first method depends on the condensation reaction between amino group of baclofen and p-dimethyl amino benzaldehyde forming yellow Schiff base complex, which absorbs maximally at  max = 430 nm, the Beers law was obeyed in the concentration range of (5-70)  g/ml with molar absorptivity equal to 5.75x104 L mol-1 cm-1, with correlation coefficient equal to 0.9997 and relative standard deviation (RSD%) equals to 1.11. The second and third methods were based on oxidization reaction of baclofen by ferric chloride reaction in presence of acidmedium, followed by Complexation of reduced Fe (II) ion by 2,2,-bipyridine or potassium ferric cyanide, forming a red and blue complex in second and third methods respectively absorbing maximally at 550 nm and 730 nm for second and third method, respectively. Beers law was obeyed in the concentration range of (1-25)  g/ml for both methods. Molar absorptivity is 7.11x10+4 and 6.55x104 Lmol-1 cm-1 for method II and III, respectively. The correlation coefficient was found to be equal 0.9999 and 0.9998 with relative standard deviation (RSD %) equal to 0.97 and 0.85 for method II and method III, respectively. The proposed methods can be successfully applied for determination of baclofen in pharmaceutical preparation and can be applied with usefulness in quality control laboratories.
