Abstract
PHYTOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE AERIAL PARTS OF BIXA ORELLANA L.

ABSTRACT

Bixa orellana L. (Family: Bixaceae), is a native to Brazil and now cultivated in tropical countries for its red dye that is obtained from the pulp surrounding the seeds. Its leaves are diuretic and febrifuge; used to treat bronchitis, cuts, dysentery, eye inflammation, gonorrhea, jaundice and hepatitis. Phytochemical investigation of a methanolic extract of the aerial parts led to isolate two phenolic ketones and one each of phenolic ester and fatty ester. There structures have been elucidated as 3-hydroxyacetophenone (1), 3,4-dihydroxyacetophenone (2), n-butyl resorcylate (3) and n-tetradecanyl n-docosanoate (4) on the basis of chemical reactions and spectral data analysis.
