ABSTRACT
Hyaluronan (or Hylauronic acid - HA) a polysaccharide found in all tissues and body fluids of vertebrates as well as in some bacteria. Hyaluronan with the structure D-glucoronic acid (1-β-3) N-Acetyl –D- glucosamine (1-β4)n is a linear polymer built from repeating disaccharide units. It is available in various forms like mouthwashes, sprays and Gel form is the most common available form of hyaluronic acid. It is available in various concentrations 0.2% and 0.8%. Hyaluronan enhances tissue regeneration, stimulates osteoinduction, is involved in the process of osseointegration and plays an important role in the early stages of wound healing, antiinflammatory properites. Hyaluronan has a multifunctional role in periodontics as an adjunct to scaling and root planing, topical application of sub gingival hyaluronic acid gel can be used as an antimicrobial agent, as abone regenerating agent in periodontal bony defects, in Guided bone regeneration., in Peri-implant maintenance of immediate function implant and as an autologous cell hyaluronic acid graft for gingival augmentation in mucogingival surgeries. Topical HA 0.2% or gel forms a protective coating around the oral cavity to shield exposed or sensitized nerve endings from overstimulation. Hyaluronic acid (as sodium hyaluronate coats the oral mucosa, enhances tissue hydration, and accelerates healing. Therefore this review focuses on the structure, properites and various clinical application s of hyaluronan.
Keywords: Hyaluronan, Gengigel, periodontitis, Gingival Crevicular fluid.
