ASSESSMENT OF MALOCCLUSION STATUS IN RELATION TO AREA OF RESIDENCE AMONG 12-18 YEAR OLD SCHOOL CHILDREN IN AN URBAN CITY OF INDIA

ABSTRACT
Background: The prevalence of Class II and Class III malocclusion in relation to area of residence among the school children and surrounding area was not documented till date. Aims and Objectives: To compare the prevalence and severity of malocclusion particularly Class II and Class III cases between the rural and urban children. Settings and study design: A cross sectional study was conducted among the 12-18 year old school children, from rural and urban schools in Ghaziabad and surrounding area. Total of 1692 children were evaluated for the study. Materials and methods: The schools were selected by simple random sampling technique. The oral examination was done by dentists using sterile, mouth mirror under natural daylight. Results: A total of 1692 children (890 male and 802 female) were considered for the study. After inclusion and exclusion criteria 1262 children were assessed and the prevalence of Class II malocclusion was more among females than males and more in urban than in rural areas. Conclusion: The prevalence of Class II malocclusion was more in urban than rural areas, more among female children than their male counterparts.
