HEPATOPROTECTIVE DRUGS IN AYURVEDA

ABSTRACT
Liver is the largest gland of human body. It plays an important role in digestion. Liver has double blood supply, this dual blood supply provides sufficient protection against infarction in the liver. Liver performs multifold functions like- Manufacture and excretion of bile, Manufacture of several major plasma protiens such as albumin, fibrinogen, and prothrombin. Metabolism of Protiens, Carbohydrates, and lipids, storage of vitamins (A,D,B12) and iron. The important function of liver is detoxification of toxic substances such as alcohol and drugs. Toxic liver injuries produced by drugs and chemicals may virtually mimic any form of naturally-occurring liver diseases. Hepatotoxicity from drugs and chemicals is the commonest form of iatrogenic disease. In addition, exposure to hepatotoxic compounds may be occupational, enviornmental, or domestic that could be accidental, homicidal, or suicidal ingestion. The use of herbs as medicine is the oldest form of healthcare known to humanity and has been used in all cultures throughout history. Herbal medicine or herbalism is the use of herbs or herbal products for their therapeutic or medicinal value. They may come from any part of the plant but are most commonly made from leaves, roots, bark seeds, and flowers. They are eaten, swallowed, drunk, inhaled, or applied topically to the skin Herbal products often contain a variety of naturally-occuring biochemicals from plants, many of which contribute to the plant’s medicinal benefits.
