ABSTRACT
Background: An estimated 1.7 million new cases of breast cancer (BC) are diagnosed each year in women worldwide. Of these, the majority are categorized as invasive ductal cell carcinoma. The obesity is a public health problem. The evidence that link obesity indices and breast cancer (BC) is highly controversial. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between obesity indices and BC severity and treatment exposure. Methods: A total of 400 BC patients aged 25-65 years attending BC clinics at the Jordanian Royal Medical Services, Jordan were screened for the presence of obesity. The experimental design permitted to include 134 newly-diagnosed BC patients who were not exposed to any type of interventions and 262 recently-diagnosed BC patients (up to three months). Recently group member were sub-divided in two sub-groups to control exposure to chemotherapy. The patients were further divided according to BC stages into early stage and advanced stage as a measurement of BC severity. Pre-and postmenopausal status was also studied. The obesity indices consisted of BMI, WHpR, WHtR and WC. Results: More than 50% of BC patients were obese. The obesity prevalence was decreased when the Jordanian group cut-off points were used. Obesity in advanced stage was more prevalent than early stage. The WC and WHtR were higher in chemo (102.6 ± 1.0 vs. 0.65 ± 0.0 cm) than in newly-diagnosed (99.7 ± 1.1 vs. 0.63 ± 0.0 cm) groups and non-chemo (97.5 ± 1.3 vs. 0.62 ± 0.0 cm). Conclusion: Obesity was prevalent among BC patients and it was increased with BC severity. The burden of obesity on society continues to increase and warrants closer attention by clinicians for both cancer prevention and improved outcomes after diagnosis.
