EFFECT OF MEDICATIONS IN ORTHODONTICS – A LITERATURE REVIEW

ABSTRACT

The percentage of adults seeking orthodontic therapy has considerably increased during the last two decades. Many of these adults as well as younger patients may be on medications for various systemic diseases or local problems. Apart from the target tissues, these drugs will have a potential effect on paradental tissues as well, thus modifying their responses to orthodontic treatment. It is absolutely important for the orthodontist to be aware of the effect of these drugs for a successful outcome during orthodontic treatment. This review focuses on published data regarding the influence of each of these medications during orthodontic treatment. The effect of these medications from an orthodontic perspective has been presented in tabular format also for ready reference.
