Abstract
A STUDY ON DRUG RESISTANCE PATTERN AMONG URINARY PATHOGENS IN A TERTIARY TEACHING HOSPITAL

Amudavalli K.* and Dr. Amudhan Arvind E.

ABSTRACT

One of the commonest infection worldwide is urinary tract infection and the antibacterial susceptibility and clinical characteristic are important in deciding the management. This study is done to assess the susceptibility and frequeny of urinary pathogens in our geographical location. A total of 332 positive urine samples were assessed; E. coli was the most prevalent organism (43.4%). With respect to the uropathogens susceptibility rates, the resistance of enterobacteria to ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim was 30% and 50%, respectively. Susceptibility was more than 90% for nitrofurantoin, third-generation cephalosporins and aminoglycosides. Increased resistance of antimicrobials to organisms signifies the need of knowledge of susceptibility rates of uropathogens in particular geographic location which will be useful in deciding the management regarding patients with urinary tract infections.
