ANTI-DIABETIC ACTIVITY OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF DESMOSTACHYA BIPINNATA IN STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

ABSTRACT
The present study was aimed to evaluate the anti-diabetic activity (potential) of Desmostachya bipinnata on streptozocin induced experimental diabetes in rats. Desmostachya bipinnata(linn) is a sacrificial grass, which has pharmacological activities like anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, anti-diarrhoeal, anti-ulcerogenic. The extract many chemical constituents i.e., flavonoids, phenolic compounds like tannins and carbohydrates. Oral administration of methanolic extract of Desmostachya bipinnata (200 and 400 mg/kg/bodyweight/rat/day) for 15 days significantly reduced the elevated levels of blood glucose and in diabetic rats. Electronic microscopic studies showed significant morphological changes in mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum of β cells of STZ induced diabetic rats. Also a decrease in the number of secretory granules of beta cells was observed in the STZ induced diabetic rats. Effect on weight gain and fluid intake has revealed the increase in weight gain and fluid intake. The extract produced a significant (P<0.05) uptake of glucose by isolated rat hemi-diaphragm but less effective to that of the reference drug, Glibenclamide. Glucose uptake by isolated rat hemidiaphram method revealed the increase in glucose uptake in standard and extract treated groups. The pathological abnormalities are normalized after treatment with Desmostachya bipinnata extract, the efficacy of Desmostachya bipinnata was capable with Glibenclamide, a well-known hypoglycemic drug. so it can be concluded that the methanolic extract of DB may be effective as anti-diabetic.
