DOSE EFFECT OF CLONAZEPAM ON LIPID PROFILE IN RATS MALE

ABSTRACT

Antiepileptic drugs influence cholesterol and lipoprotein serum level, this study designed to assume the effects of dose amount on this parameters. In this study serum cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides (TGs) levels were measured in eighteen healthy male rats (150-200 g) (subdivide to three groups) after receiving two doses (0.05 mg\kg and 0.1 mg\kg) of clonazepam (CLZ) respectively for twenty day. Compared with controls, rats on (0.05 mg/kg) dose showed no significant changes in TGs, VLDL, Cholesterol and HDL levels, except the levels of LDL which increased significantly, While rats male on (0.1 mg/kg) dose showed a significant increase in Cholesterol, TGs, LDL and VLDL values compared to control. Our results suggest a need for careful monitoring of serum cholesterol levels in patients with epilepsy receiving clonazepam.
