UTERINE FIBROID: AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE

ABSTRACT

Uterine fibroids are the commonest of all pelvic tumours present during the reproductive age group and is also termed as fibromyoma or myoma or leiomyomas It is a benign tumour of uterus and arises from the smooth muscles of the uterus. From the period of Hippocrates, it has been explained in different names. 20% of women at the age of 30 have fibroids in their wombs. The exact etiology is unknown but some factors like hormonal factors, parity, racial factors, genetic factors and environmental factors also influence the risk of fibroid development. Fibromyomas are of different types as subserous, interstitial or submucous, according to their relationship to the peritoneum and to the endometrium. Most of the fibroids (50%) remain asymptomatic and could be discovered out during gynaecological examination. The symptoms may include menstrual disturbances and pressure symptoms. Uterine fibroids cannot be directly correlated with any diseases mentioned in Ayurvedic classics. Descriptions of two diseases, grandhi and arbuda is similar to that of tumour but specific description of grandhi or arbuda related to reproductive organ is not available.When going through the review of etiopathogenesis and symptomatology as per modern sciences, uterine fibroids can be considered as mamsa vridhijanya vikara and is correlated to Mamsa Granthi.
