DISTRIBUTION AND ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY OF CANDIDA SPECIES IN DIFFERENT CLINICAL SAMPLES IN NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL,NNEWI,ANAMBRA STATE

ABSTRACT
The prevalence of Candida infection in 113 subjects (Male (n=16) and female (n=97)) with different clinical conditions were determined using wet film preparation and Gram stained smear, cultural identification, germ tube test, corn meal agar, carbohydrate fermentation test and sensitivity test. The overall prevalence of Candida was 27(23.89%) reflected as 2 (7.40%) males and 25 (92.6%) females. The highest prevalence was found among subjects within the age group 21 – 30(38.46%) years, and least prevalence was recorded for age group 61-70(0.00%) years. The proportion of the isolates positive for Germ tube test and Corn meal agar tests were 14 (51.85%) and 15(55.55%) out of the 27 positive samples respectively. Samples were examined from three clinical sources: High vaginal swab, sputum and urine. The isolates were speciated into 14 C.albican, 7 C.tropicalis, 4 C. parapsilosis, 1 C.quillermondii and 1 C. glabrata using Corn meal agar, germ tube and fermentation test. The sensitivity testing were carried out with four antifungal drugs: Fluconazole, Griseofulvin, Terbinafine and Ketoconazole for 27 (23.89%) subjects. The present study observed that from samples of subjects with clinical conditions different species of Candida may be isolated with different antifungal sensitivity.
